Mentoring Children of Promise is dedicated to supporting Children of Incarcerated Parents (COIP) surpassing a typical program approach to provide an equitable response to their unique needs. Mentors from BBBSNCA extend hope to COIP, recognizing the challenges they face due to having one or both parents in prison. Unfortunately, the struggles of COIP often go unnoticed, as there are few initiatives tailored to their specific circumstances. While numerous programs focus on assisting those currently incarcerated or reintegrating into society, there is a notable scarcity of viable initiatives addressing the unique needs of COIP. In Washington, DC, where the incarceration rate is one of the highest in the nation, troubling statistics reveal that COIP are seven times more likely to face incarceration at some point in their lives. This underscores the urgency of addressing the challenges faced by these vulnerable children.
