Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area plays a vital role in supporting the Latino community through our Hermanos y Hermanas Mayores initiative. This program connects Latino youth with caring, bilingual mentors who share cultural and linguistic understanding. Mentors help children celebrate their heritage while developing the confidence and skills to reach their full potential.
Our Latino Outreach Initiative builds strong, trusting relationships between mentors, youth, and families. By fostering meaningful, culturally grounded connections, the program empowers young people to embrace their identity, strengthen community ties, and envision brighter futures.
In the Community:
Hermanos y Hermanas Mayores provides carefully screened mentors who engage youth ages 6 to 15 in positive, enriching activities that promote personal growth, academic success, and healthy decision-making. Youth accepted before their 16th birthday may remain in the program until age 18. Bigs and Littles spend 4 to 8 hours per month together in the community, focusing on consistency and connection.
In Schools:
The program also partners with local schools, where teachers, counselors, and parents refer students who can benefit from additional support. Through these school-based matches, mentors help youth stay engaged in school, build confidence, and improve academic performance.
Across the Washington metropolitan region, volunteers in the Hermanos y Hermanas Mayoresprogram serve as role models and cultural connectors who demonstrate the power of mentorship to uplift youth, strengthen families, and build more inclusive communities.
