Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area Celebrates 75 Years of Empowering Local Youth
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 19, 2024—Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area (BBBSNCA) is proud to celebrate 75 years of empowering local youth through life-changing mentorships. Since its founding in 1949, BBBSNCA has supported countless children by matching them with caring adult mentors (“Bigs”) who encourage each child to reach their full potential.
“For 75 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area (BBBSNCA) has been a beacon of hope for children facing adversity,” said Michael Sanzi, President & CEO of BBBSNCA. “Through the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, donors, and staff, we have fostered impactful connections that have changed the trajectories of countless young lives.”
A Legacy of Empowerment: From Then to Now
From its beginnings in serving at-risk juvenile boys, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area (BBBSNCA) has grown and evolved into an organization serving children of all backgrounds and various ages. Over the course of its 75 years, the organization has pioneered various mentorship programs that have been the cornerstone of BBBSNCA’s work.
One such program is Learn24 OST, which, with the support of the DC Government, provides essential one-on-one mentoring for at-risk youth aged 10-18. This program is a vital part of BBBSNCA’s mission as it often is the sole source of consistent support for these children.
“Each story of change strengthens our mission, reminding us of the power of mentorship and community,” says Michael Sanzi, President & CEO of BBBSNCA. “The support we receive is instrumental in enabling these transformations—it greatly enhances our ability to positively impact more young lives and pave the way for future initiatives.”
As Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area (BBBSNCA) continues its journey, the organization plans to commemorate its 75 years through a series of special events.
