Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area Celebrates the Impact of Mentorship at Big Celebration Gala

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 30, 2024—Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area (BBBSNCA) held its annual Big Celebration Gala on October 30, 2024, at Nationals Park Stadium in Washington, D.C. With an impressive turnout of 256 community leaders and supporters, the gala was a resounding success. It raised record-breaking funds to further support the organization’s mission of creating life-changing one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better night,” said Michael Sanzi, President & CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area. “We’re truly thankful for all our sponsors and every person who has devoted their time to helping young people. Their commitment ensures that our local youth has access to the support, education, and opportunities they need to succeed.”

A Night of Recognition and Inspiration

The evening shed light on two individuals within the organization who have outdone themselves in terms of defending and empowering young people. The Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year Awards were presented by “Littles,” Josiah, and Sarah to their respective “Bigs,” Andre Sadler and Treasure Leach.

Andre Sadler, named Big Brother of the Year, has been matched with Josiah since he was eight years old. His unwavering commitment to providing Josiah with a diverse range of experiences exemplifies the core values of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area.

Treasure Leach, named Big Sister of the Year, has been a strong support system for her “Little” Sarah. Their shared experiences—from playtime and picnics in the park to dance recitals and car conversations—exemplify the powerful bond that can form through one-to-one mentorship.

Honoring A Champion of Change

An impactful moment of the evening was when Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area (BBBSNCA) presented the Special Achievement in Business and Philanthropy Award to long-time board member William P. Angrick III. As the co-founder, CEO, and chairman of Liquidity Services, Angrick has leveraged both his professional expertise and resources to support the organization’s mission. Through over two decades of service on BBBSNCA’s Board of Directors, he has helped to create life-changing opportunities for local youth.

In his inspiring speech, he shared, “True success often involves confronting obstacles head-on,” drawing powerful parallels between his own experiences overcoming adversity and the challenges faced by the “Littles” in Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area’s programs. His unyielding support embodies the spirit of community and defending potential. Two essential components that fuel Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area’s success.
