“Beyond School Walls” Program participants on the go again!
Early this May, 12 Littles, sixth graders from Takoma Educational Center in Washington, DC, travelled to the Federal Communications Commission in Washington to meet with their mentors as part of the “Beyond School Walls” Program.
Big Brother Tom Reed, FCC Director of Business Opportunities, welcomed the excited Littles as they matched up with their FCC Bigs in the conference room. The Littles felt very grown up when they received their personal security badges! Then the Bigs led the Littles to the Technology Center.
“They were so excited to see all that technology,” reported Wayne Reed, Executive Director of the BBBS Program. “They had a ball! It was the favorite part of their visit.”
Every Little was fully engaged in every piece of technology in the room. Bigs and Littles learned about and experienced hands-on the newest electronic items, including tablets, 3D television and wireless HD radio and sound systems.
The 3D technology was a hit with the Littles, who enjoyed wearing the 3D glasses! One of the mentors helped a Little learn how to superimpose his own likeness on a photograph of his favorite soccer star and he walked away with the photograph to take home and show off.
“Beyond School Walls” helps students widen their horizons and envision career opportunities to help them create productive futures for themselves. FCC Bigs include an Office Manager, Chief of Staff, attorneys, IT professionals and more as career mentors.
