GWU Students Host “Come to College”

Mentors from George Washington University’s Advanced Spanish class sponsored a full day field trip for BBBS Latino mentees and Kid Power program students to the GWU-Mount Vernon Campus on May 2nd. The 56 children are students at H.D. Cooke and Harriet Tubman elementary schools and BBBS Littles.

More than 30 volunteers and the “Vamos a GW- Come to College” Committee escorted the group gwu-3to the GW campus library, helped the children participate in a science project, theatre and writing classes, and joined them playing sports before leaving. BBBS mentors wanted their Littles to be exposed to the idea of secondary education for themselves in the future.

Professor Dolores Perillan’s Spanish service learning class has participated with Hermonos y Hermanas Mayores Initiative for over nine years.  gwu-4This trip is funded by a grant award in response to a request written by Prof. Perillan’s students to enhance their community participation.
